Tamron Announces 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 G2 Zoom for Sony E-Mount

Tamron has announced the development of the 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 (Model A075), an all-in-one zoom lens designed for Sony full-frame E-mount cameras. The lens succeeds the 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD, introduced in 2020, and represents a second-generation redesign with several key changes.

The most notable modification is the wider focal length at the short end, which has been extended from 28mm to 25mm, while the long end remains at 200mm. Though the difference between 25mm and 28mm appears small on paper, it provides a visibly wider angle of view, especially relevant for landscape and travel photography. The lens maintains the same maximum aperture range of f/2.8 to f/5.6, giving it an advantage in speed over competing models such as Sigma’s recently introduced 20-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Contemporary.

The Japanese company emphasizes improvements in optical performance and autofocus accuracy, with the G2 model adopting the company’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor in place of the stepping motor used in the earlier version. Close-up performance has also been enhanced, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:1.9 at 25mm, allowing the lens to reach half-macro capability.

The lens supports 67mm threaded filters and incorporates refinements to its external build, including improved zoom and focus ring ergonomics. A function button is also present. Compatibility with Tamron Lens Utility software allows for customization and firmware updates.

As with other development announcements from the company, Tamron has not disclosed full specifications, pricing, or detailed availability. The lens is expected to launch in autumn 2025, coinciding with Tamron’s 75th anniversary.
