Tamron has announced the 25–200mm f/2.8–5.6 Di III VXD G2, a new all-in-one zoom lens designed for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. The lens covers wide-angle to telephoto perspectives for travel, portraiture, and everyday photography and succeeds the company’s 28–200mm f/2.8–5.6 Di III RXD, introducing a slightly wider focal range along with updates to autofocus performance, optical design, and usability over the predecessor. The release coincides with the company’s 75th anniversary and follows a series of new lens announcements ahead of IBC 2025 in Amsterdam.

The new model extends the wide end of the zoom range from 28mm to 25mm while maintaining the same 200mm telephoto reach. Despite the wider coverage, the lens retains a quite compact form, measuring 121.5mm in length, 76.2mm in diameter, and weighing 575 grams. The construction consists of 18 elements arranged in 14 groups with a nine-blade circular diaphragm, while the minimum focusing distance is 0.16 meters at the wide end and 0.8 meters at the telephoto end. The lens accepts 67mm threaded filters, in line with Tamron’s standard for its mirrorless lineup.

Autofocus is driven by Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor system, replacing the RXD unit used in the previous model. The Japanese company states that the new drive delivers faster and more precise focusing for both stills and video, improving tracking performance for moving subjects. The optical design aims to enhance image quality over the earlier version, although the company has not disclosed detailed optical diagrams or element types.

At 25mm, the lens provides half-macro capability with 1:1.9 magnification, making it suitable for close-up work in addition to general photography. The aperture range remains f/2.8–5.6, with a minimum of f/16–32 depending on focal length. The lens is compatible with Tamron’s Lens Utility software, allowing users to configure focus settings and customize functions through a computer or mobile device.
