Thypoch Unveils Vintage-Inspired 28mm f/2.8
Thypoch has revealed the Eureka 28mm f/2.8 ASPH, a compact manual-focus lens that draws heavily on mid-20th-century design. Its styling and proportions reference the Dallmeyer Anastigmat 35mm f/3.5 built into the Ilford Advocate film camera, a model released in 1949 and updated in 1952 with the faster lens variant that inspired Thypoch’s approach. The original Advocate used a die-cast aluminum body with a distinctive white enamel finish, and its built-in lens protruded only slightly from the camera’s surface — a trait Thypoch has adopted in the form of an extremely slim pancake design.
The Eureka 28mm f/2.8 measures between 19.5 and 21.9 millimeters in length depending on the mount and weighs 137 grams. It produces a 42.5mm equivalent field of view on APS-C cameras. The brass barrel and narrow front element echo the Ilford design, while the optical formula combines one aspherical element with three high-refractive elements. The Chinese company states that the lens delivers modern resolving capability with controlled ghosting, flare, and vignetting. Distortion is kept low, with a measured rate of 0.462%, and the lens focuses down to 0.4 meters. The rendering includes the company’s characteristic octagonal starburst effects and a shallow-profile manual-focus lever.
The lens is available in two finishes: Matte Black, which is designed to wear over time and reveal the brass underneath, and Pearl White, which has a pearlescent appearance. Thypoch developed both coatings with an emphasis on matching the texture and visual qualities of vintage equipment. Alongside the Leica M-mount version, the company is releasing a Fujifilm X-mount version intended to maintain aesthetic continuity with Fujifilm’s camera bodies. An M-to-X adapter kit is also offered.
Thypoch cites an interest in compact lenses for reversal film photography as part of the project’s origin, noting that existing options were either too large or produced excessive vignetting that could not be corrected in analog workflows. The company says the Eureka 28mm went through multiple design iterations before reaching the final optical and mechanical configuration.
The Eureka 28mm f/2.8 ASPH is available for preorder with a temporary 10% discount, lowering the price from $459 to $413. Retail pricing for the adapter kit ranges from $459 to $479 depending on configuration, and shipping is scheduled to begin in March 2026.
