Viltrox Releases AF 15mm F1.7 Air Wide-Angle Lens for APS-C Cameras
Viltrox has expanded its Air series of lightweight lenses with the introduction of the AF 15mm f/1.7 Air, a wide-angle prime lens designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras. The lens, available for Fujifilm X, Nikon Z and Sony E mounts, offers a focal length equivalent to 22.5mm in full-frame terms, making it suitable for scenes that require a broad field of view.
The AF 15mm f/1.7 Air maintains a small and portable form factor: it weighs approximately 180 grams and measures about 56 millimeters in length with a diameter of 65 millimeters, allowing it to fit easily into compact camera kits. The front of the lens accepts 58-millimeter filters and the build incorporates a metal mount for durability, with a protective coating on the front element designed to resist moisture and oils. Despite its size, the optical structure is relatively complex, consisting of twelve elements arranged in ten groups, with three extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberration, three high-refractive index elements to improve edge sharpness and two aspherical elements intended to control distortion. The lens also uses coatings that help limit flare and ghosting in challenging lighting conditions.
The nine-blade diaphragm features a maximum aperture of f/1.7 for greater light intake in low-light environments and shallow depth-of-field effects, and closes down to a minimum aperture of f/16. The angle of view reaches approximately 84.9 degrees, which makes the lens suitable for landscape, interior and architectural photography, as well as for video production where a wide perspective is often required.
Autofocus is handled by an internal stepping motor (STM), which is intended to deliver quiet and precise focusing performance. The lens supports both autofocus and manual focus modes, works with eye and face detection and exhibits minimal focus breathing. The internal focusing mechanism ensures that the lens does not extend during operation, and the minimum focusing distance is approximately 0.23 meters, allowing a maximum magnification ratio of 0.1 times, enabling semi-close compositions within a wide frame.
Additional features include electronic aperture control and EXIF data transmission. Firmware updates are possible via a built-in USB-C port. The lens does not feature image stabilization, which places reliance on in-body stabilization where available.
The Viltrox AF 15mm f/1.7 Air is currently available with a retail price of $239 US.
