Viltrox Introduces 2x Teleconverter for Sony E-mount
Viltrox has introduced a new 2x teleconverter for Sony E-mount cameras, expanding its recent slate of December releases beyond conversion lenses for the Fujifilm X100 series. The teleconverter is designed to work with the same range of Sony telephoto lenses supported by Sony’s own 2x converter, including the 70–200mm f/2.8 GM and GM II, the 100–400mm, 200–600mm, and 400–800mm zooms, as well as the 300mm f/2.8 GM, 400mm f/2.8 GM, and 600mm f/4 GM primes. Viltrox also lists compatibility with its own 135mm f/1.8 prime.
Optically, the teleconverter uses a design of nine elements in five groups, including three high-refractive-index elements. It features full electronic contacts, allowing EXIF data transmission, autofocus communication, and lens-based image stabilization. The unit weighs approximately 229 grams and is described as dust- and splash-resistant.
As with any 2x teleconverter, the device doubles the effective focal length of the attached lens while reducing the maximum aperture by two stops. A 70–200mm f/2.8, for example, becomes a 140–400mm f/5.6, while a 400–800mm f/6.3–8 extends to 800–1600mm with a maximum aperture as small as f/16 at the long end. These trade-offs are inherent to the format and apply regardless of manufacturer.
One notable claim from Viltrox is support for high-speed continuous shooting, including the 120 fps mode available on cameras such as the Sony A9 III. It remains unclear how this support behaves across different focus modes or whether any limitations apply when using third-party lenses, as Sony has traditionally restricted some high-performance features to its own optics.
The Viltrox 2x Teleconverter for Sony E-mount costs $280, less than half of Sony’s FE 2x Teleconverter, which retails for $598. The teleconverter is already listed for order at major retailers, with availability expected within a few weeks.
