Viltrox Introduces AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro Lens

Viltrox has announced the AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro lens, a fast standard prime designed for Sony E and Nikon Z full-frame mirrorless systems. The lens is positioned as part of the company’s professional lineup, offering a metal construction, advanced optical design, and autofocus powered by a linear motor system.

The optical structure consists of fifteen elements arranged in eleven groups, including eight high-refractive index, three extra-low dispersion, and one ultra-precision aspherical element. The lens also incorporates Viltrox’s Advanced HD nano coating, which is intended to suppress reflections and ghosting under strong light sources.

The autofocus system is driven by the company’s Hyper Voice Coil Motor (HyperVCM), which provides fast and quiet focusing performance. The lens supports face and eye detection on compatible camera systems and exhibits limited focus breathing, which benefits video recording. The minimum focus distance is 0.45 meters, allowing for moderate close-up shooting with a maximum magnification of 0.145x.

Physical controls include an aperture ring that can be clicked or de-clicked, an AF/MF switch, and a customizable function button. The lens supports internal focusing and includes a USB-C port for firmware updates. The barrel is made of forged aluminum alloy with weather sealing against dust and moisture, and the front element features water- and smudge-resistant coatings. The lens uses a brass bayonet mount and supports 77mm filters.

The Sony E-mount version weighs approximately 800 grams and measures 84.5 by 111 millimeters, while the Nikon Z version weighs about 830 grams with a slightly longer body of 113 millimeters. The aperture range extends from f/1.4 to f/16, and the optical design includes eleven aperture blades.

According to the manufacturer, the AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro is designed to maintain optical performance suitable for high-resolution sensors, with attention to minimizing common optical artifacts such as onion-ring bokeh and ghosting. The lens’ construction and optical arrangement are consistent with the Chinese company’s recent releases in the Pro series, following a similar design language emphasizing solid build and simplified manual control layout.
