Viltrox Presents First Lens in Evo Series
Viltrox has introduced the AF 85mm f/2.0 Evo FE, the first model in a new Evo lens series developed for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. The lens employs an optical construction of ten elements arranged in eight groups, including two high-refractive index components and two extra-low dispersion elements designed to control chromatic aberrations and preserve detail across the frame. The Chinese company indicates that the lens is intended to offer usable sharpness at f/2.0, with optimal clarity expected around mid-range apertures such as f/4 and f/5.6. A nine-blade diaphragm contributes to background blur rendering, while aperture settings range from f/2 to f/16.
The autofocus system is driven by an STM stepping motor, supporting continuous AF, eye- and face-detection, and silent performance suitable for hybrid shooting. Manual override is available, and photographers can switch between AF and MF using a dedicated control. Additional physical elements include an aperture ring that can be clicked or de-clicked, a customizable function button, and a USB-C port that enables firmware updates. The minimum focusing distance is 0.74 meters, resulting in a maximum magnification of 0.13x.
The AF 85mm f/2.0 Evo FE is built with a compact and lightweight profile, measuring 76 millimeters in length and weighing 340 grams. The mount includes a rubber seal for basic weather resistance, and the front element features coatings designed to reduce moisture and smudging. The filter thread diameter is 58 millimeters.
Viltrox positions the Evo series as an evolution of its mid-tier offerings, filling the gap between the more affordable Air lenses and the larger, faster Lab-series optics. Although it does not match the maximum aperture of the company’s existing 85mm f/1.4 Pro or f/1.8 II models, the new f/2 version offers significantly smaller proportions and reduced weight, emphasizing portability and cost efficiency.
