Light Lens Lab Releases 50mm f/1.5 Z21 Inspired by Vintage Angenieux Lens

Light Lens Lab has officially launched the 50mm f/1.5 Z21, a lens that draws clear inspiration from the legendary Angenieux Type S21 first introduced in the 1950s. The original French-made optic, designed by Pierre Angenieux, became known for its fast f/1.5 aperture and distinctive image rendering—qualities that made it highly desirable among collectors and vintage lens enthusiasts. However, due to its extreme rarity, the Type S21 now commands prices in the range of $7,000 to over $40,000 at auction, placing it well beyond the reach of most photographers.

Light Lens Lab’s Z21 aims to bring that unique optical character into the hands of modern users while incorporating contemporary refinements. Although it closely follows the original six-element, four-group optical layout of the S21, the Z21 uses newly developed, Lanthanide-infused glass elements created specifically for this project. According to the Chinese company, such updates not only preserve the classic look but also improve contrast and performance consistency.

One of the key functional updates in the Z21 is its modernized rangefinder focusing mechanism, designed for tighter manufacturing tolerances and more accurate manual focus operation. While built for Leica M-mount systems, the lens also supports a much larger image circle than the original—up to 44 by 33 millimeters—making it suitable for use with medium format digital cameras like the Hasselblad X and Fujifilm GFX, with the appropriate adapters.

Physically, the lens is made from lightweight aluminum alloy and is assembled by hand in limited quantities, with a claimed focus on build quality and optical fidelity. It has a minimum focusing distance of 0.7 meters.

Light Lens Lab has described the Z21 as the first release in a broader “Z21 project” lineup. The company plans to expand the range into other focal lengths for both photography and cinematography use in the coming years.

The 50mm f/1.5 Z21 is is offered in two finishes: High-Gloss Black Paint and Matte Black Paint, the former being exclusive to export markets. It is priced at $1,099 and began shipping on June 1.
