Cosina Teases Compact APO-Skopar 75mm f/2.8 Lens

Cosina has introduced a new addition to its Voigtländer VM lineup, the APO-Skopar 75mm f/2.8, a compact medium-telephoto lens designed for Leica M-mount rangefinder cameras. The announcement follows closely behind the release of other 75mm lenses in the same system, indicating a continued focus on lightweight telephoto options within the rangefinder segment.

The APO-Skopar 75mm f/2.8 is built around portability: the lens measures 44 millimeters in length and weighs 191 grams, dimensions that place it closer to standard 50mm primes than typical short telephoto lenses. Its narrow barrel is designed to avoid obstructing the optical viewfinder frame, even when the supplied metal hood is attached, which extends only minimally beyond the front element. The construction is entirely metal, consistent with Voigtländer’s established design approach.

The optical design consists of seven elements arranged in multiple groups and incorporates several anomalous partial-dispersion elements. The lens is classified as apochromatic, meaning that axial chromatic aberration is reduced to very low levels by aligning different wavelengths of light onto a single focal plane. The aperture diaphragm uses ten blades, and the maximum aperture of f/2.8 represents a compromise between brightness and compactness compared to faster alternatives.

Focusing is fully manual and relies on a mechanical helicoid system. The lens includes a rangefinder coupling mechanism that allows accurate focusing through compatible optical rangefinders, with a minimum focusing distance of approximately 0.7 meters depending on the camera body. As with other VM lenses, it can also be adapted to mirrorless systems, where the full-frame image circle remains usable.

The APO-Skopar 75mm f/2.8 will be available in black and silver finishes. Initial pricing in Japan is set at around 90,000 to 99,000 yen, though international pricing has not been finalized. Availability is expected to begin in May 2026.
