Panasonic Announces Lumix S 40mm f/2 for L-Mount

Panasonic has announced the Lumix S 40mm f/2, a prime lens for the L-mount system. The lens features an optical construction of seven elements arranged in six groups, three of which are aspherical, with the front one carrying a fluorine coating.  and an autofocus handled by a stepper motor with internal focusing. Its aperture runs from f/2 to f/22 through a seven-bladed diaphragm, and the minimum focusing distance is 0.30 meters, yielding a maximum magnification of 0.17x.

At 144 grams and 40.9mm in length, the lens was conceived as a compact everyday option, particularly suited to pair with the Lumix S9 body. Panasonic deliberately matched its external dimensions and 62mm filter thread to those of the existing 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 kit zoom, allowing users to swap between the two without changing filters or accessories. No lens hood is included, and the barrel geometry does not accommodate a bayonet-style hood, though Panasonic states that flare and ghosting suppression were prioritized in the optical design to compensate for this absence.

Despite its small footprint, the lens incorporates an AF/MF switch, a lens function button, and a customizable focus ring that can be configured to adjust focus throw, focus direction, or act as a general control ring. The body is sealed against dust and moisture and rated for operation down to -10°C. For video use, Panasonic reports that the design suppresses focus breathing and includes micro-step aperture control to allow smooth exposure transitions.

Alongside the lens announcement, Panasonic has updated its roadmap for the L-mount system. Two additional lenses are in development: a wide-angle prime with a compact profile, positioned somewhere in the 18–24mm range and intended to complement the S9 body, and a large-aperture telephoto zoom covering approximately 50–200mm. No release dates have been indicated for either.

Panasonic also announced a Titanium Black edition of the Lumix S9 for the European market, with a leather-textured finish with titanium accents. Unlike the earlier Titanium Gold edition, which had limited availability, the Titanium Black is intended for broad distribution across Europe. No announcement has been made regarding availability in other regions.

The Lumix S 40mm f/2 is priced at $399.99 and will be offered in both black and silver finishes, with shipping expected to begin in early June 2026. The Titanium Black edition of the Lumix S9 is priced at £1,299 in Europe, with pre-orders opening at the beginning of May.
