Phil Penman: Street Scenes

With Street Scenes, photographer Phil Penman marks a new chapter in contemporary urban photography. The book — the long-awaited follow-up to his bestseller New York Street Diaries — is a passionate tribute to the world’s great cities: from the relentless lights of New York to the timeless alleyways of Paris and the ever-moving streets of Tokyo.

Penman, widely regarded as one of the most influential street photographers of his generation, possesses a rare talent for freezing the moment: every shot captures the shifting soul of the city, conveying a narrative power that goes far beyond simple visual documentation. His photographs move between scenes of intense urban life and unexpected moments of stillness, painting a complex and authentic portrait of contemporary city spaces.

Street Scenes is more than a photography book: it is an invitation to see cities with fresh eyes, to uncover the hidden beauty in everyday details, and to recognise the quiet stories woven into streets across the world. A book to be savoured slowly — for those who love photography as much as for those who are simply captivated by the life of great cities.

About the Author

Phil Penman is a British-born, New York-based photographer with over 25 years dedicated to documenting the ever-changing streets of New York City. His distinctive black-and-white style has established him as one of the most significant visual chroniclers of the modern metropolis.
Before gaining prominence for his street work, Penman built a distinguished career as a news and magazine photographer, with work appearing in publications such as The Guardian, Paris Match, National Geographic, and Time Magazine. His 9/11 reportage — now preserved in the archives of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum — was featured on NBC, the BBC, the History Channel, and Al Jazeera. His documentation of New York City during the pandemic lockdown was acquired by the U.S. Library of Congress, placing his work alongside that of legendary figures such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange.
Penman’s street photography has been exhibited in galleries worldwide, most recently as part of the Leica centenary celebrations. He has been named among the “52 Most Influential Street Photographers”, alongside Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus, Sebastião Salgado, and Garry Winogrand. He also teaches photography workshops globally for the Leica Akademie.
His four books trace a remarkable publishing trajectory: Street (2019) became a bestseller capturing New York’s raw energy; New York Street Diaries (2023) achieved bestseller status and was featured at MoMA, selling over 7,500 copies in its first two years; Big New York (2024) placed his work alongside Elliot Erwitt and Thomas Hoepker; and Street Scenes (2025).
