Thypoch Releases Its First Autofocus Zoom Lens
Thypoch, a Shenzhen-based optics manufacturer previously known for manual, vintage-inspired prime lenses, has entered the autofocus mirrorless market with the Voyager 24–50mm f/2.8, a full-frame constant-aperture zoom designed for Sony E-mount. The company positions it as the first full-frame autofocus zoom lens developed by a Chinese optical brand, and describes it as the opening product in a planned lineup of six autofocus lenses.
The lens is built around an internal zoom mechanism, meaning the barrel remains physically fixed throughout the entire focal range: no extension or retraction occurs during operation, which improves balance on handheld rigs and stabilizers and reduces potential ingress points compared to conventional extending zoom designs. The 10-blade diaphragm aperture remains constant at f/2.8 from 24mm through 50mm, keeping exposure consistent during focal transitions — a principle long established in cinema zoom design.
The optical formula consists of 16 elements arranged in 13 groups, incorporating two aspherical elements, two extra-low dispersion elements, and three high refractive index elements. Thypoch states that no software distortion correction was used in the design, requiring all correction to be handled optically — a constraint that differentiates it from Sony’s own 24–50mm f/2.8, which relies partly on in-camera processing. Both lenses share the same element count and grouping, but the formulas differ. A further distinction between the two is minimum focusing distance: Sony’s lens reaches 0.18 meters at the wide end, while the Voyager remains at 0.3 meters across the entire zoom range.
The autofocus system is designed for quiet operation and subject tracking, with support for eye AF and continuous autofocus on Sony Alpha bodies. Native E-mount integration provides compatibility with in-camera AF-C tracking and AF/MF switching.
The lens accepts 67mm filters, weighs approximately 432 grams, and measures 92.88 millimeters in length and 73.6 millimeters in diameter. Minimum focusing distance is 0.3 meters throughout the zoom range, with a maximum magnification of 0.216x. Weather sealing covers the mount, control rings, and front element, and physical controls include an aperture ring with a clicked detent and an “A” position for camera-controlled exposure, a manual focus ring, and a customizable function button alongside an AF/MF switch.
