Light Lens Lab Teases the Z21 Series’ New 75mm Prime

Light Lens Lab has announced the 75mm f/1.5 “Z21,” a manual focus prime lens for Leica M-Mount. The lens follows the 50mm f/1.5 “Z21” released the previous year, but departs from it in one significant respect: whereas the 50mm was a faithful optical recreation of a rare 1950s P. Angenieux S21 50mm f/1.5, the 75mm has no historical reference lens. It is an entirely original optical design developed by Light Lens Lab, informed by the company’s study of what it describes as the “Z21” rendering signature — the visual character associated with the 50mm.

The optical formula comprises six elements in four groups. One of those elements is infused with Lanthanide, a rare earth material also used in the 50mm f/1.5 “Z21,” which affects light transmission properties and contributes to the lens’s rendering characteristics. The aperture diaphragm uses ten blades, and the focus range runs from one meter to infinity. The front filter thread accepts 55mm filters.

Light Lens Lab has stated that feedback from the 50mm f/1.5 “Z21” informed the development of the 75mm, with particular attention to corner sharpness, edge-to-edge resolution, and image circle coverage. The expanded image circle is intended to ensure full-frame performance when the lens is used on adapted mirrorless bodies beyond the M-Mount system.

Physically, the lens measures approximately 71mm in length and weighs 454 grams, and features a body constructed from aluminum alloy with a matte black paint finish.
