Christopher Anderson: INDEX
Life rarely follows a neat path. It unfolds through unexpected turns, chance encounters, moments of danger, and periods of reflection. Over the past three decades, Christopher Anderson has photographed all of these experiences, moving effortlessly between major historical events and deeply personal stories.
INDEX brings together eleven bodies of work that trace the evolution of Anderson’s career. Each series is presented as an individual volume, creating a collection that reflects both the breadth of his journeys and the consistency of his photographic vision.
The work begins in Afghanistan, where Anderson was already reporting on September 11 and continued documenting the region throughout the years that followed. It includes Haiti, where he joined a group of migrants crossing the sea toward the United States aboard a fragile wooden boat, a journey that nearly ended in tragedy and later earned him the Robert Capa Gold Medal.
Other volumes explore places that became part of his life, including France and New York, alongside countries that left a lasting impression on him, such as China. The collection also moves into more intimate territory, documenting family holidays, self portraits, everyday observations, and personal fascinations, including his long-standing interest in cars. Alongside these quieter chapters are photographs made in areas marked by conflict and instability, where Anderson continued to examine the complexities of contemporary life.
Designed by acclaimed artist Brian Roettinger, INDEX is presented as eleven separate books housed in a slipcase. Together, they form a personal and visual record of the first decades of the twenty first century, revealing both the defining events of an era and the small moments that often go unnoticed.

About the Author
Born in Canada and raised in West Texas, Christopher Anderson is a photographer and filmmaker whose work explores the intersection of personal experience and contemporary history. Over the past three decades, he has developed a distinctive visual language that moves between documentary, portraiture, and intimate storytelling.
Anderson first gained international recognition through his coverage of conflict, migration, and political change. A defining moment came when he joined a group of Haitian migrants attempting to reach the United States aboard a handmade wooden boat. The vessel eventually sank in the Caribbean, and the resulting photographs earned him the Robert Capa Gold Medal, becoming a turning point in both his career and personal life.
His assignments have taken him from war zones and presidential campaigns to portraits of major political and cultural figures. In 2008, following the birth of his first child, he shifted his focus toward family life, creating the acclaimed and bestselling books Son, Pia, and Marion, works that helped redefine contemporary personal photography.
A prolific author, Anderson has published numerous monographs and remains one of the most widely published photographers of his generation, contributing regularly to leading international publications. He served as Photographer in Residence at New York Magazine from 2011 to 2014 and was a member of Magnum Photos from 2005 to 2023.
In 2025, he photographed members of Donald Trump’s inner circle for Vanity Fair. Today, he works across photography and film, balancing personal projects with editorial, documentary, portrait, and fashion commissions. His forthcoming book, INDEX, will be published by Stanley Barker in spring 2026.
