The Artist’s Atlas Tokyo is a city guide unlike any other: Tokyo as seen, lived, and loved by the artists who call it home.

Conceived by Cécile Poimboeuf-Koizumi, founder and editor of Chose Commune, the Paris based independent publishing house devoted to photography and known for its bold design and editorial choices, the book brings together fifteen artists, among them some of the most celebrated names in Japanese photography, from Rinko Kawauchi to Sakiko Nomura and Koji Onaka, each sharing a deeply personal map of the capital: favourite cafés, hidden alleys, bars that come alive after midnight, bookstores, galleries and beloved neighbourhoods. Their itineraries are woven together with addresses unknown even to many locals, original photographic series created for the occasion, and drawings, while illustrator Izumi Shiokawa contributes bespoke visuals that run through the volume.

Born in 1987 to a Japanese mother and French father, Poimboeuf-Koizumi grew up between cultures, spending her earliest years in Tokyo, a place that has remained central to her imagination and identity. After years of being asked where to go, what to eat, and how to wander through the city, she chose not to answer herself but to hand the question over to the artists who shape it.

Part atlas, part artist book, part cultural diary, this hybrid publication proposes a new relationship between the city and its images, offering readers a rare way into the metropolis: through the eyes of the people who create within it. More than a travel companion, it is an intimate portrait of urban life filtered through creative sensibilities, and a document of Tokyo as a working environment for artists rather than a backdrop for tourists.
