7Artisans has extended the AF 40mm f/2.5 to Nikon Z and Leica L mounts, following the lens’s original release for Sony E-mount in February 2026. The optical and mechanical specifications remain largely unchanged across all three versions, with minor dimensional differences attributable to the different mount diameters.

The lens comprises seven elements in six groups, with a nine-blade aperture diaphragm. Autofocus is handled by a stepping motor, offering quiet operation and compatibility with eye-detect and subject-tracking features on cameras from Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica. Minimum focusing distance is 0.4 meters. The front filter thread and overall length of approximately 40 millimeters remain consistent across mount variants, with weight around 90 grams on the E-mount version — figures that place the lens among the most compact full-frame autofocus primes currently available.

One optical characteristic worth noting is the bokeh rendering: the AF 40mm f/2.5 produces a pronounced soap bubble bokeh effect — a stylized rendering in which out-of-focus highlights take on a distinctive ring-like appearance. This is a known characteristic of certain optical formulas and is presented by 7Artisans as an intentional aesthetic choice, though it will not appeal to all photographers.

Compatibility is not universal across all L-Mount cameras: the lens is confirmed to be incompatible with the Sigma BF and the Leica SL3-S.
