2022 Action Camera Roundup: DJI Osmo Action 3

The new Osmo Action 3 is a 4K action camera from DJI that includes extreme battery life, support for vertical video, twin touch screens, and support for live streaming. The Osmo name and iconic design have been brought back.

“Ever since we released the original Osmo Action in 2019, we have been continuously inspired by the stunning footage captured with it,” said Paul Pan, Senior Product Line Manager at DJI. “As our users keep pushing further, moving faster, and diving deeper, our mission is to provide a device built to keep up with them. Every new feature made Osmo Action 3 the most reliable, tough, and easy-to-use action camera. We can’t wait to see what our users create when they push their limits with Osmo Action 3.”

The Type 1/1.7 (7.4 x 5.6mm) sensor, which is the heart of the new action camera, can record 4K footage at up to 120 frames per second (fps). In order to get the most out of the video during post-production, the Osmo Action 3 also features D-Cinelike Color Mode and electronic image stabilization. 155 degrees of the scene are seen through the lens in front of the sensor. DJI’s RockSteady 3.0 technology, which lessens camera shake in all directions with footage up to 4K/120p, powers the electronic image stabilization. Even after 360o rotations, HorizonSteady continues to assist in removing camera shake and adjusting for horizon stabilization. A firmware upgrade DJI made to the Action 2 earlier this year includes the HorizonBalancing feature, which corrects horizon tilts within +/-45o with 4K/60p video. According to DJI, HorizonBalancing is “the ideal compromise between RockSteady and HorizonSteady.”

According to DJI, the battery was the beginning point for designing the new Osmo Action 3 to be a single solution for documenting an active lifestyle. The 1,770 mAH “Extreme Battery” in the Action 3 enables the camera to record for as long as 160 minutes on a single charge (in 1080p video with electronic image stabilization off). A first for action cameras, according to DJI, native fast-charging functionality allows the camera to charge from zero to 80% in “as little as” 18 minutes and from zero to 100% in 50 minutes. The camera can reportedly withstand temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celcius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit).

The camera includes a built-in mounting system that firmly hooks it to a variety of surfaces. It can also be mounted vertically to accommodate Instagram and TikTok content thanks to an unique horizontal-vertical frame. The action camera’s dual touchscreens, which are “the first” in the industry, make it simple to use both in front of and behind the lens. Additionally, it boasts a three-mic stereo configuration that cuts down on wind noise, enables Wi-Fi livestreaming at 1080p/30, 720p/30, and 480p/30, and lets you pause recording while a stream is in progress. High-quality video and audio are provided for conference calls and live streams thanks to UAC/UVC Webcam support.
