7Artisans Introduces Max AF 135mm f/1.8 for Nikon Z

7Artisans has announced the Max AF 135mm f/1.8, a full-frame autofocus telephoto prime built for Nikon Z-mount cameras and the first lens in the company’s new Max series.

The optical formula consists of 16 elements arranged in 13 groups, incorporating six extra-low-dispersion elements and five high-refractive-index elements. 7Artisans states that the design is capable of resolving detail on sensors of up to 60 megapixels, a figure that currently exceeds the maximum resolution available within the Nikon Z system — the Z7 II, Z8, and Z9 all top out at 45.7 megapixels — though it does suggest the company may have additional mounts in mind. References to Sony E-mount and L-mount variants already appear in the product’s URL on the 7Artisans website, lending some credibility to that assumption.

The lens uses a 12-blade diaphragm, a configuration that tends to produce more circular out-of-focus rendering and cleaner starburst patterns when the aperture is stopped down. An IMC multi-coating is applied to the optical elements to reduce flare and ghosting in backlit conditions. Autofocus is handled by a silent STM stepping motor paired with a simplified reduction gear system, which 7Artisans says delivers fast and quiet focusing suitable for both stills and video. The minimum focusing distance is 0.68 meters, yielding a reproduction ratio of approximately 1:4.

The control layout includes a clicked aperture ring covering f/1.8 through f/16 with an Auto position, alongside a second declicked multifunction ring that can be assigned to aperture, ISO, or other parameters on compatible Nikon Z bodies. Two programmable function buttons are built into the barrel for direct access to frequently used settings. A USB Type-C port is also present for firmware updates.

The body is constructed from what 7Artisans describes as aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, finished with an anti-smudge coating. Dust sealing is included, along with a textured grip surface. The lens measures 91.2 by 130 millimeters and weighs 1,014 grams. The front filter thread is 82mm.

The Max AF 135mm f/1.8 for Nikon Z is available now and carries a retail price of $689, placing it well below the two most obvious points of comparison: the Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 LAB for Nikon Z, currently available at $899, and Nikon’s own Nikkor Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena, which lists at $2,196 after a temporary discount.
