APSARA Launches LUMIERE and PRESTIGE Cinema Lenses
Since its founding in 2018 by cinematographer Ron Sim (CSC), Simmod Lens has specialized in lens modifications tailored for cinema and video production. The company has now transitioned into manufacturing original lenses under the APSARA brand, marking its move from a modification service provider to an original equipment manufacturer. The APSARA brand launches with two distinct product lines: LUMIERE and PRESTIGE, both aimed at the high-end cinema lens market.
The LUMIERE series is designed for full-frame mirrorless systems and is available in Canon RF, Sony E, Nikon Z and Leica L mounts. It includes four prime lenses with focal lengths of 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 75mm, each featuring a fast T1.4 aperture, all of them maintaining a large-format image circle, compatible with sensors such as the ALEXA LF Open Gate. Mechanically, the lenses offer a 300-degree focus rotation, industry-standard 0.8 mod gears and a uniform 80mm front diameter with a 77mm filter thread. A notable feature is the integrated, battery-powered illumination system that softly lights up the focus markings, offering over 15 hours of operation from a single button cell. The system is dimmable and switchable, optimized for use in low-light conditions without compromising the lens profile or interfering with image capture.
The PRESTIGE series comes in PL mount, with LPL conversion options under development. The lineup consists of five prime lenses: 24mm T2.0, 35mm T2.0, 50mm T2.0, 75mm T2.8 and 100mm T2.8 Macro. These lenses support up to a 44mm image circle, covering large-format sensors used in cameras such as the ARRI Alexa LF, RED V-Raptor, Sony Venice and Canon C500 II. Focus rotation spans 270 degrees, and all lenses feature 0.8 mod cine gears. The front diameter is consistent across the series at 95mm, with an 86mm internal filter thread. Housings are constructed from aluminum for durability in demanding production environments.
Both the LUMIERE and PRESTIGE series were developed in collaboration with SIRUI, with Simmod Lens applying its specialized tuning to achieve distinct visual characteristics. Assembly, quality control, and final calibration are conducted in-house at the company’s Canadian facility.
APSARA lenses are now available through the brand’s website and authorized resellers. The LUMIERE lenses are priced individually at $849 or as a four-lens kit with a custom case for $3,200, while the PRESTIGE series lenses are priced at $949 each or $4,800 for the complete five-lens set with a hard case.
