AstrHori 12mm f/2.8 Fisheye for Full-Frame Mirrorless Mounts

AstrHori has released a new 12mm f/2.8 fisheye lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras. The $256 optic is available for Nikon Z, Sony E, Leica L, Fujifilm GFX, and Canon RF mounts.

The 11 components that make up the new ultra-wide lens are divided into eight groups. It has a clicking aperture ring that regulates a five-bladed diaphragm that offers an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/16 and a tight focusing distance of 0.2 meters (about 7.9 inches) to infinity. About 90mm wide by 100mm length make up the lens (about 3.5 by 3.9 inches).

Although AstrHori did not mention any unique optical components used in the lens production, the business claimed that the front element has been given a “multi-layer coating” that prevents flare and ghosting while enhancing color accuracy when operating in bright lighting settings.

On full-frame cameras, the lens has a 185-degree angle of view and AstrHori says that large viewing angle is well-suited for travel, landscapes, panoramas, nighttime scenes, and more. The company says that once the extreme distortion is corrected for in post-production software like Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, the lens can create dynamic ultra-wide angle photos.

The 757.5-gram fisheye lens is a manual-only optic, which means it also does not have any electrical communication with the camera. However, given that the lens is being offered for the Canon RF mount – a full-frame camera system that Canon does not currently license to third-party manufacturers and actively pursues any lens makers that reverse engineer it — this is probably to be expected. Canon, on the other hand, does not appear to have an issue with fully manual lenses.

“The aperture ring is stepped with the right amount of resistance, marking full stops from f/2.8 to f/16,” AstrHori says. “The all-metal lens barrel features an engraved depth of field and focuses scales. A metal lens mount also offers increased durability between the lens and camera.”
