Blackmagic Design Unveils the Pyxis 6K Full-Frame Cine Camera

Blackmagic Design unveiled a full-frame cube-style cinema camera at NAB 2024. The Pyxis 6K camera is available in EF, PL, and L mounts and shares many capabilities with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K, which the company debuted last year.

Blackmagic promotes its new Pyxis 6K as “the world’s most riggable full frame digital film camera,” with an “extremely versatile design.” There are several screw threads, allowing creators to simply add rigging, handles, EVFs, and other accessories to suit a variety of processes. Despite this versatility, the camera itself is not particularly huge. It is constructed from machined aluminum, resulting in a reasonably lightweight design weighing 1.5 kilos.

The lens attachment takes up much of the front of the camera, while the left side has a huge LCD and numerous physical buttons. The top, bottom and right sides have expansion slots and ports. The camera has two CFexpress Type B card slots, a USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 expansion slot for external media, an embedded stereo microphone, a mono speaker, headphone and mic ports, a battery port, a 12V DC input, Ethernet, 12G SDI out, REF in, and more.

The Pyxis 6K uses the same 6K resolution full-frame picture sensor as the Cinema Camera 6K. The sensor boasts 13 stops of dynamic range and dual native ISOs of 400 and 3,200.

The camera captures open gate 3:2 footage at 6,048 x 4,032 resolution and up to 36 frames per second. Higher frame rates are available in 6K DCI 17:9 (48 fps), 6K 2.4:1 (60 fps), and Full HD (120 fps).

The camera does not include an electronic viewfinder. However, it is compatible with the new EVF that Blackmagic announced alongside the Ursa Cine 12K camera. This EVF includes many controls and a Full HD OLED display. The camera’s built-in side display is four inches and supports HDR content with a maximum brightness of 1,500 nits.

Both the L-Mount and EF versions of the Blackmagic Pyxis 6K camera can be ordered now for $2,995. The PL mount version costs somewhat more, at $3,195.
