BlackScale Lab Unveils the BlackBox 120 System

BlackScale Lab has introduced a new film scanner. The BlackBox 120 technology makes it simple to utilize a camera to scan medium format films.

The BlackBox 120 is a film scanning system by BlackScale Lab that use a DSLR or mirrorless camera and simple components. It connects to a lens’ filter threads. A film holder inserts into the black box, holding the film flat. The product’s design eliminates the need for alignment and light reflections, making scanning film easier and faster.

Below the film, there is an LED light with an optical diffuser and a 125-by-100-millimeter illumination area. The light has a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 98, resulting in accurate color from the film, and a color temperature of 5000K. It requires a USB-A charger or power bank to function. Alternatively, users could utilize a Rybozen light panel, which must be purchased separately.

The package includes everything except the camera and lens. The step-up rings are compatible with practically any lens and block 100% of ambient light for improved scanning quality. The accompanying extension pieces (20mm, 30mm, 40mm, 100mm, and 150mm) are compatible with lenses up to 140mm. These sections position the camera at the optimal height based on the lens’s minimum focus distance. They connect with a bayonet lock, similar to lens mounting.

The BlackBox 120 scans all 120-type film forms, including 6×7, 6×6, and 6×4.5, with three interchangeable masks. It also supports 6×9 film formats natively. It employs the Canon Film Guide QM3-2695-000 and contains 22cm of cut film, fitting two 6×9 frames, three 6×7 frames, three 6×6 frames, or four 6×4.5 frames at once. The holder protects the film from scratches during the scanning process and maintains a 7.5mm space between the light and the film to facilitate dust removal.

The BlackBox 120 is available for purchase on the BlackScale Lab Etsy website for $309.
