The Canon EOS R8 Camera is Aimed at Hybrid Shooters

Canon has officially unveiled the EOS R8, a mid-range camera with some amazing features and specifications, to their full-frame mirrorless lineup. The new Canon EOS R8 is powered by a full-frame CMOS sensor with the same 24.2MP resolution as the EOS R6 Mark II. Canon claims that the sensor is housed in their lightest mirrorless body to date. The EOS R8 is aimed at hybrid shooters who need to prioritize portability or those who want to experiment with the full-frame EOS R imaging technology for the first time.

“My work is a lot about movement and not missing a beat with the fast shutter on the EOS R8 is so important to me as an artist.” Jasper Soloff – Photographer and Director

The camera can shoot up to 40 frames per second (FPS) with a fully electronic shutter. The Canon R8 lacks a mechanical shutter and in-body image stabilization, forcing it to rely on image-stabilized lenses to eliminate vibration. The Canon R8 can also do focus stacking and, when combined with the automatic A+ creative mode, can do HDR stacking based on subject detection.

The camera weighs a little over a pound (461 grams) with a battery, SD card, and no battery. It has dimensions of 5.22 x 3.39 x 2.76 inches (132.5 x 86.1 x 70.0 millimeters). The R8 looks identical to the Canon R6 Mark II on the outside; however, it lacks a joystick and the picture rating buttons on the back of the camera.

The R8 includes a micro-HDMI connector that can output clean HDMI at resolutions up to 4K 60p. The EOS R8 can capture H.265 10-bit 4:2:2 4K60p videos oversampled from the 6K sensor and FullHD at up to 180fps. Canon claims that the camera can shoot in 4K at conventional frame rates (25/30fps) for up to 2 hours without overheating, but 4K60p recording mode is restricted to around half an hour. Canon Log 3 is also available, as is HDR PQ compatibility.

The new EOS R8 inherits the EOS R5 and EOS R6 Mark II’s exceptionally effective Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus mechanism. This can recognize and track people, animals, and cars automatically. You can also track a human talent’s head, face, or eyes when working with them. Not only that, but you may also choose which eye gets the most attention.

Furthermore, while taking videos with certain Canon lenses, the camera can automatically adjust for focus breathing, keeping the lens’ field of view consistent across the entire focusing range.
