Canon Unveils a Paid Firmware Update for Professional Stop Motion Creators

High-end stop motion animation can be intensively labor exhaustive if you’re trying to create something good.
Canon has just announced the latest firmware update for EOS R, and if you’re a professional stop motion creator (or want to become one), this new firmware update is surely tailored for you.

This firmware is all about controlling the scene more accurately.
The latest update — which you can buy for $100 or can be pre-installed on a new Canon EOS R for a $100 premium — increases LiveView resolution and adds focus peaking over USB, key features for pros who use the popular software Dragonframe. Once installed and hooked up to Dragonframe, the firmware lets your EOS R display a LiveView resolution of 1920×1280 in Dragonframe rather than the regular 960×640, and allows you to use Manual Focus Peaking over the USB connection.

The company does note that there will be some limitations with this update, like HDMI output is disabled, as display performance options. Manual focus peaking becomes an option over USB but it will no longer work in the viewfinder or on the camera’s rear screen in a number of situations:

  • When an EF-S lens is used
  • When [Multiple exposure] is set
  • When [Cropping/aspect ratio] is set to an option other than [FULL]
  • When the shooting screen is magnified
  • When you keep holding down the shutter button after shooting
