Canon Unveils Clippable, Waterproof, Colorful IVY REC Camera

Following a successful Indiegogo campaign, Canon’s Ivy Rec camera is making its way to retailers. This screen-less, clippable, go-anywhere point-and-shoot camera is designed for outdoor lovers who want something that’s more rugged than their smartphone to document their adventures.

The main appeal here is that it’s a clippable, shockproof, and waterproof camera that, on paper, sounds like a good alternative to pulling your expensive phone out for every opportunity to snap a picture. Canon says that an empty square space on the clip acts as a viewfinder of sorts.

The camera features a 13-megapixel sensor, support for capturing 1:1 and 4:3 JPEG images in resolutions up to 3104 x 3104 and 4160 x 3120, video recording at 720p/30fps through 1080p/60fps in MP4 format with a 10-minute recording limit per video file, and a fixed 25.4mm f/2.2 lens. But more important is its WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing the smartphone to function as a viewfinder and enabling social media savvy users to share images and footage using the Canon Mini Cam app.

The clip is where this device gets smart. Canon’s designers wanted to make a camera that had a physical viewfinder so they didn’t need to include a display. Normally this would mean the inclusion of some pieces of glass, plastic, or maybe even mirrors.

But they found a way to make the most of the required physical elements already included on this device, placing the camera lens as close to the clip as possible, then made sure the clip could adequately frame the space that the camera would capture. This removes the need for a display or any other viewfinder entirely.

On the opposite side of the lens, Canon has implemented a dial that lets you switch between photo and video modes, as well as turning on its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings to connect with your phone.

Using the Canon Mini Cam app, you can frame your shots, set a self-timer, transfer images to your smart device, and keep updated on the state of your battery and how much room is left on the microSD card.
The camera is also shockproof and waterproof up to 2m/6.6ft, and features a built-in rechargeable battery that you can top up using the included Micro USB cable.

According to Kazuto Ogawa, president and COO of Canon USA, the IVY REC is meant to “offer the younger generation consumer the opportunity to go where the moment takes them and capture them in an instant.”

The Canon IVY REC will be released in three colors: Riptide (Blue), Avocado (Green), and Dragon Fruit (Pink). Canon suggested today that the camera is scheduled to be available in October 2019 and it’ll cost approximately $130.
