Huawei Releases Mate 90 Series in China
Huawei has introduced the Mate 90 series in China, comprising the Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro, Mate 90 Pro Max and Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design. The new lineup combines updated Kirin processors, larger batteries and revised camera systems, with the Pro Max and RS models receiving the most substantial photographic upgrades.
The standard Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro feature 6.75-inch displays and are powered by the Kirin 9035 processor. Both use triple-camera systems, although the Pro has a larger 50-megapixel main sensor with a variable f/1.4–f/4 aperture, a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with a 90mm-equivalent focal length and a 40-megapixel ultrawide camera. The standard model retains a 50-megapixel main camera and 40-megapixel ultrawide but uses a different sensor configuration and an 88mm-equivalent telephoto lens.
The Mate 90 Pro Max introduces a more substantial imaging system, combining a 50-megapixel main camera with a Type 1/1.28 RYYB sensor, optical stabilization and a variable f/1.4–f/4 aperture. Its main distinguishing feature is a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with a similarly sized sensor, an 89mm-equivalent f/2.6 lens and 4x optical zoom. A 40-megapixel ultrawide camera completes the main imaging arrangement, while Huawei also includes a multispectral sensor for color analysis.
The Pro Max incorporates Huawei’s XMAGE processing system, including updated portrait rendering and computational HDR functions. The company claims that its imaging pipeline can capture a dynamic range of up to 18 stops, although this figure has not been independently verified.
The Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design uses essentially the same camera hardware as the Pro Max but adopts a different exterior, including an octagonal camera module and more expensive construction materials. Both models feature 6.9-inch OLED displays, Kirin 9500 Pro processors and 6,800mAh batteries, while the RS is available with up to 2TB of storage.
The new smartphones run HarmonyOS 7 and are available in China. Prices start at 5,999 yuan (approximately $895) for the Mate 90 and 6,999 yuan (around $1,045) for the Mate 90 Pro. The Mate 90 Pro Max starts at 9,499 yuan (approximately $1,420), while the Mate 90 RS begins at 12,999 yuan (around $1,940) and reaches 18,999 yuan (approximately $2,830) in its 2TB configuration. The Ruiying Z10 camera module is priced separately at 5,999 yuan (around $895). Huawei has not announced international availability for the series.
