Logitech Unveils the Mevo Core Micro Four Thirds Streaming Camera

The Logitech Mevo Core is a new $999 interchangeable lens camera that employs the Micro Four Thirds standard to provide high-quality streaming and on-device 4K capture for up to six hours. Designed for people who are already interested in — or have used — Logitech’s Mevo system, the Core significantly increases image quality over the original fixed-lens, small-sensor Mevo camera, which was released four years ago, and adds the adaptability of an interchangeable lens system.

Mevo cameras, including the new Core, are aimed for content makers who don’t want to understand the intricacies of professional camera systems. A band that wishes to broadcast and film its live act, for example, may lack the knowledge required to do so properly using typical camera systems. Logitech’s system is made up of hardware and software.

“We are on a journey to democratize live content creation for everyone at any skill level. Mevo Core embodies this value by bringing beautiful 4K DSLR level quality but with a fraction of the complexity of a traditional camera,” Otto Cedeno, head of Mevo, says. “Every single aspect, from adjusting the optical zoom, to setting the right focus are simple taps, making it an incredibly accessible pro-level camera, even for beginners.”

The Logitech Mevo system eliminates unnecessary webcam software, encoders, wires, and capture cards, resulting in a more streamlined solution. The target audience is beginners, which is why Logitech did not disclose megapixels, ISO range, bitrate, or other parameters in its marketing materials, just stating that it can record at up to 4K resolution.

However, Mevo Core provides producers with slightly more capability than prior tiny cameras, thanks to interchangeable lenses and an HDMI port that can be connected to a computer or external recorder (lossless transmission). It also has a 3.5mm TRS audio input and two USB-C ports (one for a UVC webcam). The Mevo Core contains three built-in microphones and spatial audio processing in two modes: speech and music.

Because of its full support for Micro Four Thirds, the Mevo Core may be used with any lens designed for the format out of the box, including powered lenses. Adapted lens support is on the company’s plan for future updates.

Content can be recorded into a target iOS or Android device (tablet or phone) using the company’s app, as well as directly in-camera using a microSD card (broadcast and backup simultaneously). Streamed information is provided in Full HD 1080p30, while content recorded to the camera can be kept in up to 4K at 30p (12-bit for linear and 10-bit for high dynamic range).

Logitech’s Mevo Multicam software lets you to link any number of Mevo cameras to a single destination for a multi-cam system. While delivering these signals to numerous locations at once requires a premium subscription, sending multiple cameras to a single device is supported out of the box. It is marketed as the simplest way for the typical person to get up and running, with a multi-cam arrangement available. Cameras may be set up cable or wirelessly, thanks to WiFi 6E capability.

Perhaps the camera’s most impressive feature is its battery life, which can last up to six hours thanks to its rechargeable, replaceable 23 Wh battery. Logitech knows that its target user will most likely need the camera set up and in place for an extended period of time, whether to capture an event, a concert, sports, or a streaming session. The camera can also be powered to continue recording for an extended period of time.

The Mevo Core camera is available for $999 starting today.
