Praktica Returns With the VF212 Reloadable Film Camera
A new reloadable 35mm film camera bearing the Praktica name has appeared in United Kingdom retail channels, sold under the designation VF212. The camera is available in black and cream variants and has been spotted at high-street retailers including Currys, Boots, and Maplin’s, as well as on Amazon UK, which also ships internationally.
The Praktica brand has a long history in European photography: it was established in 1949 under the VEB Pentacon factory in Dresden, East Germany, and became one of the most widely produced camera systems in the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War, manufacturing metal SLRs that were exported across Europe and beyond. Production continued after German reunification before ending in 2001, when VEB Pentacon released its final German-made Praktica, the BX20s. The name subsequently passed through various hands, appearing on a series of Asian-manufactured film and digital products during the 2000s and 2010s, and a Praktica-branded disposable camera called the Luxmedia was reported in UK shops as recently as 2024. The VF212 continues in that lineage — it is produced in China and bears no manufacturing connection to the original Dresden operations.
The camera itself is a straightforward fixed-focus compact. Its 31mm lens operates at a fixed aperture between f/9 and f/11, and the optical viewfinder covers approximately 70 percent of the final frame. A built-in Xenon flash is included, and film advance and rewind are handled manually. The body weighs 98 grams. No detailed specifications regarding shutter speed or film speed compatibility have been published through official channels; the figures currently available come from third-party retail listings rather than from any manufacturer documentation.
The VF212 requires film to be purchased separately, distinguishing it from the earlier Luxmedia disposable, and it is priced at approximately £19.99 in the United Kingdom.
