Samyang Unveils the Updated AF 35mm f/1.4 FE II Lens for Sony E-Mount

Optics manufacturer Samyang has announced the release of the second generation 35mm f/1.4 FE II autofocus lens for both full-frame and crop sensor Sony E-mount cameras. With its launch, Samyang says that the major angles of 50mm and 35mm in its f/1.4 lineup have been updated.

The Lens is constructed of 11 elements in nine groups, including two aspherical elements and two high-refractive index elements. Autofocus is driven via Samyang’s Linear Stepping Motor (STM), which Samyang claims has been optimized for video shooting in this new version by minimizing both vibration and noise. Samyang also says the Color Contribution Index (CCI) of this new lens has been improved over its predecessor. The optical elements in the lens use what Samyang touts as its advanced coating technology which results in “superb” image clarity even in challenging light conditions. The company also promises corner-to-corner sharpness even at the maximum aperture, claiming that optical performance is consistent at all exposure settings.

The lens features an f/1.4 through f/22 aperture range, uses a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, has a minimum focusing distance of 29cm, uses a 67mm front filter thread, and is weather-sealed. Other features include a knurled aluminum focusing ring, a Focus Hold button, and a customizable switch that can be programmed with compatible Sony camera systems. It measures 75mm in diameter by 115mm long and weighs 719g.

Samyang hasn’t yet shared the pricing information for this new AF 35mm f/1.4 FE II lens, though it is likely to come in somewhere around the $600 price of its predecessor.
