ShiftCam Teases New iPhone ProRig
ShiftCam has introduced ProRig, a modular camera rig for iPhone developed in collaboration with Apple. The system is intended to provide a more conventional camera-style handling setup for mobile video production while adding mounting points, power management and support for external accessories.
At the center of the system is an aluminum frame that holds the iPhone while providing a series of mounting interfaces for microphones, lights, monitors and other production equipment. The design also incorporates a rotating handle that can be repositioned for horizontal or vertical shooting, reflecting the increasing use of both formats in mobile video workflows.
ProRig integrates physical camera controls rather than relying entirely on the iPhone touchscreen. A dedicated shutter button provides two-stage operation for focusing and capture, while additional controls can be assigned to functions such as zoom and exposure. The system takes advantage of Apple’s Camera Control interface on compatible iPhones, allowing hardware input to interact directly with supported camera functions.
Power is another part of the design. An integrated battery can extend the iPhone’s operating time during longer recording sessions, while USB-C connectivity allows additional accessories and storage devices to be incorporated into the setup. This is particularly relevant when recording higher-data-rate formats such as ProRes, which can require external storage on compatible iPhone models.
The modular structure also supports ShiftCam’s existing mobile imaging accessories, including lenses and filters, while standard mounting points allow third-party equipment to be attached. As a result, the system can be configured differently depending on whether the phone is being used handheld, on a tripod or as part of a larger video rig.
Although Apple collaborated on the development of ProRig, the product is manufactured and sold by ShiftCam rather than Apple. The partnership primarily concerns integration with the iPhone’s hardware and camera controls, positioning ProRig as a third-party accessory designed specifically around Apple’s current mobile imaging platform.
ShiftCam plans to release ProRig in early 2027. Pricing has not yet been announced, while additional details on configurations and compatibility are expected closer to launch.
