Sony Announces the AI-Powered Full Frame Camera ZV-E1

The ZV-E1 is a full-frame camera that Sony has introduced for content producers. The camera strives to give designers the best tools available with an excellent feature set created based on user feedback. The 12-megapixel full-frame sensor in the ZV-E1—which has the same resolution as the Alpha 7S III and most likely the same sensor—features a claimed 15 stops of dynamic range and a peak ISO setting of 409,600.

This is the smallest full-frame camera with IBIS, according to Sony. The small and light camera weighs only 483g (with battery and memory card included) and dimensions 121.0 x 71.9 x 54.3 mm (the Sigma fp is smaller but lacks IBIS).

In addition to a BIONZ XR image processing engine, the ZV-E1 has a full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor. Moreover, it has an AI processing unit specifically designed for its new (as of the Alpha 7R V) subject-detection autofocus and AI-powered video. The AI-driven video features include a Cinematic Vlog Setting, My Image Style, and S-Gamut3—cine/S-Log3 for flexible, creative expression.

The ZV-E1 delivers AI-based Dynamic Active Mode stabilization with Framing Stabilizer, five-axis optical in-body stabilization, and AI-based Auto Framing for movies. Multiple facial recognition, a product presentation option, and inventive zoom control are all included. Moreover, the ZV-E1 enables uploading LUTs for in-camera color grading display.

The IBIS, according to Sony, has been enhanced to provide up to 30% more stabilization, and footage works with its Catalyst Browse software to correct images based on gyroscopic data. The ZV-E1 has full-frame 4K with complete pixel readout, no pixel binning, and no other settings can enable it. Updates in FHD/240p and 4K/120p are expected in June 2023.

The camera allows for time-lapse recording inside the device. A three-capsule internal microphone includes a vari-angle LCD screen with a new touch interface and user-selectable or AI Auto-controlled three-pattern directivity (front, rear, or omnidirectional).

The camera is resistant to dust and moisture and supports UVC/UAC for direct USB streaming of audio and video at up to 4K/30p. With an improved intelligent three-capsule microphone, external mic and headphone jacks, and a digital audio interface via Multi-Interface (MI) shoe, the ZV-E1 offers professional audio quality and adaptability.

The ZV-E1 will be available for pre-sale on March 30th, with in-market availability in the first or second week of May. It retails for $2,200 for the body only and $2,500 with the 28-60mm kit lens.
