Sony Teases Its First E-Mount Fisheye Zoom

Sony has introduced the FE 8-14mm f/3.5 Fisheye G, its first fisheye zoom for the E-mount system and its first full-frame fisheye lens in roughly two decades. Designed for both still photography and video, the new G-series lens covers two distinct fisheye perspectives within a single compact optical system.

At 8mm, the lens produces a circular fisheye image surrounded by the unused portion of the full-frame sensor, while zooming to 14mm results in a diagonal fisheye that fills the entire frame. In both cases, the angle of view reaches 180 degrees. The intermediate focal lengths allow photographers to move gradually between the two formats, while a dedicated zoom lock can secure the lens at either 8mm or 14mm.

The optical construction consists of 16 elements arranged in 13 groups, including three aspherical elements, four ED elements and one ED aspherical element. The maximum aperture remains constant at f/3.5 throughout the zoom range, while the seven-blade diaphragm closes to f/22. Minimum focusing distance is 0.15 meters across the entire range, with maximum magnification reaching 0.22x.

Autofocus is driven by two linear motors and supports continuous shooting at up to 120 frames per second on compatible Sony cameras. Both zooming and focusing are internal, so the physical dimensions of the lens remain unchanged during operation. Sony has also attempted to limit focus breathing optically, while compatible camera bodies can apply additional electronic breathing compensation.

Several controls are aimed specifically at video use: the lens has separate focus, zoom and aperture rings, with the aperture ring switchable between clicked and de-clicked operation. Alongside the conventional autofocus and manual-focus settings, a Focus Hold mode can lock the current focusing distance. This can be useful for fixed-focus video configurations and VR capture, where maintaining identical focus between multiple cameras is important.

The 8-14mm can also be used as part of a stereoscopic VR setup. Two lenses can be positioned approximately 64mm apart when paired with Sony VENICE Extension System Mini units, corresponding roughly to the interpupillary distance of human vision and allowing footage to be captured for immersive 3D applications.

Despite the extreme field of view, the lens measures 63.1mm in diameter and 82.8mm in length and weighs 314 grams. Its strongly curved front element prevents the use of conventional screw-in filters, so Sony has instead incorporated a rear filter holder and supplies a template for cutting filter material to the required shape. The barrel also includes dust- and moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element.

The FE 8-14mm f/3.5 Fisheye G therefore fills a previously absent position in Sony’s native E-mount range, where photographers and filmmakers have largely relied on third-party fisheye lenses or adapted DSLR optics. It is scheduled to become available in October 2026 for approximately $1,600.
