Sony World Photography Awards 2020 – Winner and Shortlist in the Open Competition’s Street Photography Category

The World Photography Organisation has announced the winners and shortlisted images in the Open competition of the 2020 Sony World Photography Awards. The annual contest saw more than 100 images shortlisted in 10 categories: Architecture, Creative, Culture, Landscape, Motion, Natural World & Wildlife, Portraiture, Still Life, Street Photography, and Travel.
Due to the Covid19 pandemic, this year’s Sony World Photography Awards exhibition was canceled. The winner of the Open Photographer of the Year title will be announced online on June 9th
Below are the Winner and shortlist in the Open competition’s Street Photography category.

Category Winner:

Santiago Mesa, Colombia

Santiago Mesa - Colombia

Santiago Mesa won in the “Street photography” category by documenting a protester in the city of Medellin, where workers and street vendors were taking part in a march before being dispersed by the riot squad. This demonstration is one of many that have erupted in Latin America in recent years to protest the rising cost of living, inequality, and lack of opportunity.

Santiago is a Colombian documentary photographer focused on social issues in Colombia. He has 3 years of experience as a photojournalist. He has worked for several Colombian media outlets, including La Silla Vacía: half characterized for working on issues related to power and politics in Colombia. He also worked for Vice magazine and its adjoining platforms: Pacifista !, Thump and Noisey. He has participated in several photography workshops with both international and national instructors: some like Stephen Ferry, Federico Ríos, the Colectivo +1, among others. He was also a participant in the workshop 20 photographers – Mexico: where he was under the supervision of Óscar B. Castillo. He is a member of the Reojo collective.
