Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5 Di III-A VC VXD Will Be Available for Nikon Z & Canon RF Mounts
Tamron announced that its 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD lens, originally launched in 2021 for Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X-mount, will soon be available for Nikon Z and Canon RF APS-C mirrorless systems.
The lens made headlines as the world’s first mirrorless APS-C lens to offer a 16.6x zoom ratio, covering an impressive range from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto. On Nikon Z cameras, it offers a 27-450mm equivalent focal length, while on Canon RF APS-C cameras, it provides a 29-480mm reach.
The upcoming versions maintain the same optical design as previous mounts, featuring 19 elements in five groups, a rounded seven-blade aperture, Tamron’s proprietary Vibration Compensation (VC) for image stabilization, and the fast VXD linear motor for autofocus. Despite some minor differences between the versions in fact, such as AF and VC control switches only present on the Canon RF model and absent on the Nikon Z version, the core performance also remains consistent across all mounts.
The 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD weighs around 620 grams, has a 67mm filter thread and a minimum focusing distance of 15 cm and a 1:2 magnification ratio. Its versatility can be particularly significant for Nikon Z users, as Tamron marks the first third-party APS-C zoom lens with autofocus for that system, filling a long-standing gap in Nikon’s more limited DX lens lineup. While Sigma recently released a slightly more powerful 16-300mm zoom that rivals Tamron’s offering, it is not available for Nikon Z, giving Tamron a unique edge in that market.
The new versions should be released during summer of this year, while pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet. Considering the $699 price tag of the Sony and Fujifilm variants, it’s expected to be in a similar range.
