Thypoch Unveils the Simera 28mm and 35mm f/1.4 Lenses

Thypoch is a new manual lens manufacturer that is making its debut with the Simera 35mm and 28mm f/1.4 prime lenses for Leica M-mount. Although Thypoch is established in China, the brand debuted at Photopia 2023 in Hamburg, Germany. The name of the company is made up of two Greek words: “thy” and “epoch,” which translate to “your” and “fixed point.” According to Thypoch, each photographer produces a golden moment for themselves, and each click of the shutter reflects and generates an invaluable fragment of memory in their lives.

“To start with, the first series, Simera (meaning ‘Today’ in Greek), bears the profound pursuit of recording fleeting moments of the present day. The two full-frame prime lenses — Simera 35mm and 28mm — feature an imaging style of modernization, high resolution, high contrast, and low chromatic aberration, inspiring users to capture the traits exclusive to the present,” the company says. “Differing from other existing lens brands, it passionately embraces “Thy-Photography”, hoping that users can explore as various ways as possible to perform self-expression via images authentically and unlimitedly, revealing genuine relations tied up to self, others, and the world.”

According to the company, the lens has a fast aperture of f/1.4 and a 14-bladed diaphragm, allowing it to generate gorgeous bokeh and effortlessly isolate subjects from their surrounds. The lens incorporates a de-clicked aperture ring that allows for smooth aperture adjustments in photo or video applications. The minimum focusing distance for the 35mm and 28mm lenses is 0.45 meters and 0.4 meters, respectively. If that becomes too near for a rangefinder to focus on, Thypoch says the lens will provide minor resistance on the focus ring at 0.7 meters to tell a photographer to switch to EVF to ensure focus accuracy.

“The innovative design of the automatic depth-of-field indicator enables photographers to easily visualize the range of focus within their composition, assisting them in making artistic decisions, especially when utilizing hyperfocal distance in street and landscape photography,” says the company.

There are no more specifics about the optics, but the company says it strove to produce a retro look that harmonizes with Leica’s aesthetics. The Simera 35mm and 28mm f/1.4 lenses are available in silver or black aluminum and include a hood for Leica M-mount and A49 filters. They will cost $699, however, Thypoch did not specify a projected release date at the time of publication.
