Cosina Announces the Voigtlander Color-Skopar 18mm f/2.8 Aspherical for X-Mount Cameras

Cosina has unveiled a small new lens for Fujifilm X-Mount cameras. The Voigtlander Color-Skopar 18mm f/2.8 Aspherical is a pancake-style prime lens created specifically for Fujifilm’s X Series cameras.

“Designed exclusively for the Fujifilm X mount. Optics are optimized for the image sensor of the Fujifilm X system cameras. This prevents distortion, light reduction, and color casts on the periphery of the image without relying on the camera’s optical correction function,” the company promises.

The lens is exceptionally tiny, measuring only 23.5 millimeters from the mount. Cosina’s intention to make the lens small and lightweight explains why the maximum aperture is f/2.8 rather than anything quicker like f/1.8 or f/2. In terms of weight, the lens is one of the lightest X-Mount lenses, at only 115 grams.

The lens, which is equivalent to a 28mm lens in 35mm terms, is intended for landscape, architectural, environmental portraits, travel, and general photography. However, the lens is not well suited to action since, while it communicates electronically with the camera body, it lacks autofocus capabilities.

The manual focus lens features an all-metal helicoid unit, ensuring precise and smooth manual focus operation. The lens can focus as near as 0.17 meters, yielding a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:6.6.

The Cosina Color-Skopar 18mm f/2.8 Aspherical lens has seven elements organized into five groups. The seven elements include a single aspherical element and a piece of “extraordinary partial dispersion” glass. The lens features a 10-bladed aperture diaphragm and an aperture adjustment ring.

Cosina has not announced a specific release date or price for their new X-Mount lens, but it will be available sometime next month in black and silver finishes.
