Unspoken traces Jo Ann Chaus’s artistic journey towards liberation from the stereotypes and expectations traditionally associated with female identity.

Developed over more than a decade, the project began as a private exchange between the artist and her camera before evolving into a complex visual investigation of identity, memory and personal freedom. Throughout the series, Chaus embodies a succession of female archetypes shaped by inherited social conventions and internalised roles.

Although she considers herself a modern and independent woman, the artist gradually became aware of how strongly her sense of self remained connected to the generation of her mother. Her identity was still influenced by ideals of the devoted wife and the self sacrificing mother, figures defined by their responsibility towards others and by the suppression of their own ambitions and desires.

Through carefully constructed photographs, Chaus examines the tension between the woman she was expected to become and the person she ultimately became. Vintage dresses, domestic objects and carefully staged interiors connect her personal history with a broader cultural memory, transforming individual experience into a reflection on the social structures that have shaped generations of women.

As the series progresses, its autobiographical dimension gradually expands into a more universal narrative. Chaus’s self portraits are no longer concerned solely with the search for an inaccessible version of herself. They become a tribute to women whose identities have been shaped by marriage, motherhood, duty and the repeated sacrifice of personal aspirations for the wellbeing of others.

In her prologue, Debra Klomp Ching observes that the photographs allow viewers to recognise their own experiences within the artist’s story. Although the images remain deeply personal, Chaus creates space for other women to enter the narrative, identify with the figures she portrays and reconsider their own relationship with inherited expectations.

Rather than presenting female archetypes as fixed identities, Unspoken exposes their emotional complexity and reveals the possibility of moving beyond them. The project becomes an act of recognition and release, acknowledging suppressed desires and unrealised potential while opening the way towards a more autonomous understanding of the self.
