Kit Young: Between City and Silence
The Leica Gallery Munich presents Between City and Silence, an exhibition of photographs by Kit Young.
Kit Young’s work moves between the restless energy of the city and the quiet openness of the natural landscape. In photographs taken across Paris, New York and Venice, brief and often unnoticed moments of metropolitan life are transformed into images rich in atmosphere. His landscapes from Scotland and Wales offer a striking contrast. Reduced to their essential elements, they invite a slower and more contemplative gaze, allowing light, space and subtle shifts in tone to become the true subjects of the image.
Analogue photography lies at the centre of Young’s practice, not simply as a technique but as a patient and deliberate way of working. For him, the photographic process does not end when the shutter is released. The negative represents the beginning of a second and equally important phase, carried out in the darkroom. It is there that each image is studied, interpreted and gradually developed into a silver gelatin print. The final photographs are not only captured but shaped through a careful process of selection, adjustment and refinement.
Deep contrasts, reflections and intentional blur give Young’s images a dreamlike quality, while his precise compositions draw attention to gestures, transitions and the subtle tension between movement and stillness. His photographs exist in the space between reality and imagination. Rather than simply recording a place, they transform the visible world into something poetic, ambiguous and at times almost otherworldly.
About the Author
Born in 1984, Kit Young began his photographic journey in 2009, when he moved to France and joined a group of photographers working in Paris under the guidance of Gérard Moulin. During this period, he became increasingly interested in the expressive possibilities of darkroom printing and in the way apparently unrelated moments could be brought together to create visual connections within a photographic series.
Young describes himself as both a photographer and a printer, considering the two roles equally important to his practice. Behind the camera, he works instinctively, responding quickly to the subjects, lines and tonal relationships that appear before him. In the darkroom, his approach becomes slower and more methodical, as he carefully interprets and shapes each image through the printing process.
Curiosity and experimentation connect these two sides of his work. Whether photographing or printing, Young embraces uncertainty, playfulness and the possibility of making mistakes. This combination of spontaneity and precision gives his photographs their distinctive balance between immediacy and contemplation.
