Meike’s New 85mm f/1.4 Autofocus Lens for Canon RF

A new 85mm f/1.4 autofocus lens from Meike has been announced for Sony E, Nikon Z, Leica L, and – surprisingly — Canon RF mounts. Meike will be the first independent company to release a mirrorless lens for Canon with autofocus. Meike is not the first third-party camera lens manufacturer to create an autofocus-equipped Canon RF lens, but if things continue, it will be the first to sell it.

In September of last year, Canon announced that it was seeking legal action against companies making autofocus lenses for its RF mount. It’s unclear if anyone who ordered those lenses received them. Until now, no independent manufacturer has tried to make a replacement because of Canon’s legal team’s aggressiveness. The company has frequently demonstrated this outside of the camera industry in its printer division.

The Cosina Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1 aspherical, which is notable for not having autofocus, is the only third-party RF lens to have the official stamp of approval from Canon. Meike is following through on her commitment to back the RF mount for the time being, though. According to its specifications, the new 85mm f/1.4 STM lens supports full-frame cameras and has an aperture range of f/1.4 to f/16 via a 12-bladed diaphragm. Although Meike doesn’t specify whether any special lenses are included, the manufacturer claims it is built internally from 13 parts arranged into five groups.

The lens has a 77mm front filter thread, a 0.98-meter minimum focusing distance, a diagonal angle of view of 28.87 degrees, a horizontal angle of vision of 24.1 degrees, and a vertical angle of view of 16.14 degrees.
Meike plans to provide the stepping motor-driven autofocus lens for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Leica L-mounts in addition to RF mount (though the business jokingly calls it Panasonic L mount).

Meike has not set a final price or a release date at the time of publication.
