Samsung has announced two new portable SSDs, the P9 and the P7, both using the USB4 interface and available in capacities of 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB. The P9 is also the first portable SSD of any brand to offer 8TB capacity with USB4 connectivity.

“As AI-powered content creation and ultra-high-resolution video make large amounts of data part of everyday life, users increasingly expect faster and more reliable storage experiences,” said Tommy Kwon, Vice President and Head of Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics. “With fast file storage and backup, the P Series is designed to provide professionals and everyday users alike with the performance they need to work efficiently across a wide range of applications.”

The P9 is the higher-specification of the two drives, rated for sequential read speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800 MB/s — approximately twice the throughput of the previous-generation T9, which used a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface and peaked at 2,000 MB/s. The sustained write performance of the P9 is designed to handle extended recording sessions in the field, including formats such as 8K and 12K RAW, where data rates are high over prolonged periods. Its thermal design supports this by managing heat more aggressively than the P7 during sustained write workloads.

The P7 matches the P9’s peak sequential read and write speeds on paper but is less optimized for sustained high-throughput scenarios. Its thermal management is less robust, which means performance may throttle more noticeably during extended writes. Both drives share the same physical durability ratings, including drop resistance up to two meters. The P7 is positioned as a general-purpose drive suited to everyday creator workflows rather than high-demand professional production environments.
