Viltrox Launches an 85mm f/1.8 Autofocus Lens for Canon RF Mount

Viltrox has announced a new 85mm f/1.8 autofocus lens for Canon RF mount, making it the first lens the company has produced for Canon’s mirrorless cameras that feature autofocus.

The autofocus lens is constructed of ten elements in seven groups, including four short-wavelength elements and one extra-low dispersion (ED) element). Other features include a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, an aperture range of f/1.8 through f/16, a 72mm front filter thread, and a minimum focusing distance of 80cm. The company claims this set of elements reduces chromatic aberration and realizes high clarity and accurate colors. Viltrox also cites the use of HD Nano multi-layer coating that the company says reduces flare and ghosting while also improving contrast. The coating is also water-resistant and helps protect the exposed glass surfaces from moisture.

Viltrox bills the lens as lightweight and compact without sacrificing performance. It is less than 10 centimeters long and weighs 530 grams without a lens cap and hood, and the company promises what it describes as excellent autofocus performance for both photo and video purposes.

The autofocus is driven via a stepping motor (STM) and an integrated chip transfers metadata from the lens to the camera and allows for camera-based aperture changes since there’s no physical aperture ring. Autofocus can be turned on and off via a toggle switch on the barrel of the lens. Viltrox has also included a USB-C port on the lens mount for future firmware updates.

Viltrox lists the lens as compatible with the EOS R, EOS RP, EOS R3, EOS R5, EOS R6, and EOS C70. The Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 AF lens for Canon RF mount is available to purchase today for an MSRP of $399 on Viltrox’s online shop.
