Viltrox Unveils Vintage Z1 Pro Flash

Viltrox has released the Vintage Z1 Pro, a compact on-camera flash that sits at the intersection of retro-influenced design and contemporary flash technology.

The Z1 Pro is an evolution of the original Vintage Z1, which was a manual-only device: the new model adds TTL automatic flash metering, which adjusts output in response to ambient lighting conditions without requiring manual intervention, and high-speed sync up to 1/8000s — a capability absent from both the Z1 and the subsequently released Vintage Z2. HSS allows photographers to work at wider apertures in bright conditions and to freeze fast-moving subjects without being constrained by the camera’s standard sync speed. Manual control remains available across a range of power levels, from 1/1 down to 1/64.

The flash also carries over the two optical trigger modes from its predecessor: S1 fires when any flash burst is detected, while S2 is designed to ignore TTL pre-flashes and respond only to the main burst, making it suitable for multi-light and off-camera setups.

In terms of physical specifications, the Z1 Pro measures 68.5 × 72.8 × 50.2 mm and weighs 136 grams. Its casing adopts a textured finish intended to evoke vintage leather, with silver accents and what the Chinese company describes as a classic dial aesthetic. The unit includes a circular color touchscreen that provides access to flash mode, power level, battery status, and sync settings. A user-customizable startup animation is also supported.

The flash generates 24 watt-seconds of output — a figure that places it firmly in the lower range of on-camera flashes and reflects the constraints of its form factor and price point. It will not overpower direct sunlight outdoors or adequately illuminate subjects at distance. The device is oriented toward portrait, street, and lifestyle work.

The built-in rechargeable battery, charged via USB-C, is rated for up to 350 full-power flashes or 10,000 flashes at minimum output per charge, with a full recharge time of approximately 70 minutes. Minimum recycle time is listed at one second.

The unit is priced at $59.99, with an introductory discount bringing it to $55.19 at launch, and is available in versions compatible with Sony, Nikon, Canon, and Fujifilm hot shoe mounts.
