Laowa Releases the 65mm and 100mm T2.9 2X Macro APO Cine Prime Lenses

The Laowa 65mm and 100mm T2.9 2X Macro APO are two new 2X Macro lenses by Venus Optics that have been added to their array of cinema lenses. They have cinematic housing, a step-less aperture ring, and a long focus throw, and were specifically created for S35 and full-frame sensors, respectively. Venus Optics established a name for itself through time with its affordable wide-angle and macro lens ranges. A 58mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO photographic lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras was released a few weeks ago.

The two new optics, according to the manufacturer, offer a level of magnification that is rarely found on the market and will give cinematographers more freedom when filming subjects of various sizes. The 65mm can focus on an object as near as 17cm (6.69 inches) away while shooting at 2x macro, whereas the 100mm requires a minimum object distance of 24.7cm (9.87 inches).

The 65mm T2.9 2X Macro APO Cine is designed for Super35 cameras and is available in Fujifilm X, Sony E, Nikon Z, and Canon EF-M mounts. The 100mm T2.9 2X Macro APO Cine is intended for full-frame cameras and is available in the following mounts: PL, Sony E, Canon EF, Canon RF, and Leica L.

Both lenses have a large maximum aperture of T2.9, which Laowa says will help create a shallower depth of field and improve performance in low light. The 77mm front filter thread on both lenses is the same as well. A standard 0.8 mod gear is included for use on cinema camera setups on the focusing and step-less aperture rings.

The 65mm has a nine-bladed aperture diaphragm and the 100mm has a 13-bladed aperture, both of which may provide a rounded bokeh and attractive defocused backgrounds.

The apochromatic construction of the lenses, according to Venus Optics, removes lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberrations in the frame, reducing the amount of work post-production editors must put into editing video. According to the manufacturer, even while shooting at the widest aperture, both lenses will provide outstanding details and contrast from corner to corner.

The weight of the 65mm T2.9 2X Macro APO Cine is 550 grams, while the weight of the 100mm T2.9 2X Macro APO Cine is 957 grams.
