Laowa Unveils the 6mm f/2 Zero-D Rectilinear MFT Lens

The Laowa 6mm f/2 Zero-D MFT rectilinear lens from Venus Optics, which offers the same image quality as the previously published 6mm T2.1 Cine Lens but includes electronic components for in-camera settings and appropriate EXIF information recording, has been announced.

The company claims that its new $499 6mm f/2 lens, which has a 121.9-degree angle of view and almost zero distortion (Zero-D), is the widest rectilinear lens available for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) cameras. The lens, which has a close focus distance of nine centimeters (3.54 inches) and is equivalent to a 12mm lens in 35mm terms, enables users to generate some fascinating perspectives for landscape, astrophotography, architectural, drone and even exaggerated perspective portrait photography.

The new large-aperture f/2 lens has a 13 element, 9 group optical construction with two aspherical glasses, which helps minimize distortion even at such a wide angle. The company claims that this 188g lightweight lens has so little distortion that post-processing lens-profile adjustments are not necessary, making it the perfect lens for architectural and real estate projects.

With a shallow depth of field and close focus distance, users may go up close to their subjects while still preserving a clear distinction from the backdrop, creating photographs with a powerful bokeh effect. The focus magnifier will also be activated for simple focusing when rotating the focus control ring, and it will be possible to control the aperture from the camera body, obviating the need for a manual aperture ring, as this is one of the more recent lenses to have a CPU chip and motor for focusing.

Users can place screw-on circular filters on the lens itself without the use of any big, heavy filter holders because the lens features a 58mm filter thread. In other words, it is significantly more portable and cost-effective than other wide-angle (and filter) alternatives.

The lens has five aperture blades that, when stopped down to an aperture setting between f/2 and f/16, can produce 10-point sunstars.
