Steve McCurry: In Search of Elsewhere – Unseen Images

Renowned photographer Steve McCurry has traveled the world for over 40 years to capture humanity in all its forms. In his new book entitled In Search of Elsewhere, McCurry has dipped into his vast archive and culled a moving selection of imagery that has never before been seen.

In Search of Elsewhere takes us across the globe and reveals the diversity of human life.
From India, Myanmar and Cuba, to Togo, Ethiopia, Macedonia, and the monasteries of Tibet – McCurry offers a new perspective on many of the locations across the globe. Each image is reproduced at large format and in remarkable detail.
McCurry is known for creating some of the most iconic images of recent times – this new compilation reveals the incredible depth of his work.
A unique collection of previously unseen images spanning Steve McCurry’s extraordinary career:
“I compare photography to food, air, and sleep… this creative energy, this impulse, is what gives us purpose, pleasure, joy, happiness and love.” (Steve McCurry)

In Search of Elsewhere is a joyful voyage around the world and, specifically, a magnificent documentation showing how ordinary people live. For McCurry, the book is also an opportunity to show that, no matter how divided we may seem, as a population, there are more things that bind us together. He says: “It is our hope that people will discover that no matter the changes in our environment, climate, the built environment, and human activity, it will be clear that people are still basically the same as they navigate sea changes in their ways of life”.

About the Author

Steve McCurry has been one of the most iconic figures in contemporary photography for more than four decades. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, McCurry studied cinematography at Pennsylvania State University, before going on to work for a newspaper. After two years, McCurry made his first of what would become many trips to India. Traveling with little more than a bag of clothes and film, he made his way across the subcontinent, exploring the country with his camera.

It was after several months of travel that he crossed the border into Pakistan. In a small village, he met a group of refugees from Afghanistan, who smuggled him across the border into their country, just as the Russian invasion was closing the country to Western journalists. Emerging in traditional dress, with a full beard and weather-worn features after months embedded with the Mujahideen, McCurry made his way over the Pakistan border with his film sewn into his clothes.

McCurry’s images were among the first to show the world the brutality of the Russian invasion. Since then, McCurry has gone on to create unforgettable images over all seven continents and numerous countries. His body of work spans conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions, and contemporary culture alike – yet always retains the human element that made his celebrated image of the Afghan Girl such a powerful image. McCurry has been recognized with some of the most prestigious awards in the industry, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal, National Press Photographers Award, and an unprecedented four first prize awards from the World Press Photo contest.

Most recently, the Royal Photographic Society in London awarded McCurry the Centenary Medal for Lifetime Achievement and in 2019, McCurry was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame.
Steve McCurry founded ImagineAsia in 2004. The mission of IA, a non-profit organization, is to work in partnership with local community leaders and regional NGO’s to help provide educational resources and opportunities to children and young adults in Afghanistan.
