Eve Arnold (Philadelphia, United States, 1912 – London, United Kingdom, 2012) was the first woman to join the Magnum agency fully. She did it in 1951 at the age of 39. Until four years later, 1955, the second woman, Ingeborg (Inge) Morath (Graz, Austria, 1923-New York, United States, 2002) would not enter. A Spanish photographer would have to wait 50 years to enter, and it would be a woman: Cristina García Rodero (Puertollano, Ciudad Real, 1949). Today the Magnum agency has 99 photographers represented, of which only 17 are women. Not all are full members, are nominated, guests, and other degrees. Only 11 of them are full-fledged female members.
This exhibition is a tribute to these three women of photography, who have broken the limits and clichés of the photography profession, as well as showing that women know how to tell the world, they represent the reality and dreams of the life of men and women. Who knew how to open doors and windows to all who came after. Photographers and artists with their own eyes, a different and characteristic way of telling. Three extraordinary women, as their images show, a reflection of themselves and their sensitivity.
Magnum is the first photographic agency created by the photographers themselves. It was created in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David “Chim” Seymour. Each contributed $ 400, making it one of the first cooperative photographers. For the first time, photographers would control the rights of their images and, at the same time, would have more freedom in the choice of subjects and ways of representing them. For this reason, belonging to Magnum is one of the most important awards for today’s photographers.
Artists like Sebastião Salgado, Josef Kudelka, Miguel Rio Branco, Alec Soth, Martin Parr, Eliott Erwit and a long etc. are part of Magnum. Historical names like Cartier Bresson or Robert Capa, mostly male names. But Magnum, since its inception, has also had women among its members. These women are honored by this exhibition.
