Wise Announces CFexpress Type A Memory Cards for Sony Cameras

Wise has released a new brand of CFexpress Type A memory cards designed exclusively for Sony Alpha and FX line cameras. Wise’s new 160GB and 512GB cards are a first for the company, which previously produced CFexpress Type B and SD media but nothing for Sony’s camera line. That has changed this month, but there is a distinction between the two options that go beyond overall capacity.

Wise claims that the 512 GB card has enough write speed for Sony Alpha videographers to record without running out of capacity. The 160 GB capacity card, on the other hand, is branded Pro and delivers more than adequate continuous write speed and excellent data recording technology for high-end, professional filmmakers who want a card that will not drop frames.

Both cards guarantee the same maximum read and write rates of 820 MB/s and 730 MB/s, respectively, while the lesser capacity Pro card outperforms in terms of maximum sustained writing speed. While the 512 GB card can only sustain 200 MB/s – insufficient for more demanding, data-rich video files — the 160 GB card promises 650 MB/s continuous speeds. While Wise does not appear to have earned the CF Association’s VPG 400 seal for this, this could be due to a variety of factors (Wise may not have submitted for certification, may not have chosen to pay for certification, or may not have passed certification, among others). Even without that certification, assuming Wise’s specifications are true, the card should be capable of handling any current video load required by a Sony Alpha or FX camera – the only barrier will be capacity.

According to Wise, regardless of whether card is used, both are designed for Sony cameras and allow for complete recording capabilities, including all video codecs, slow and fast modes, and the best HD or 4K XACS S-I formats. Wise offers a two-year warranty on both cards.

CFexpress Type A cards, which were previously only available from Sony, are becoming more widely available, but at a high cost. Sony introduced a new high-capacity version early this year for $1,400, but photographers and filmmakers may now choose from Wise, Angelbird, Exascend, and Lexar.

Wise’s new alternatives are available today for $250.
