Marine Peixoto: Bercy Street Workout. Photographs 2020 – 2023

Marine Peixoto, the winner of the 4th edition of the LE BAL / ADAGP Young Creation Award, will showcase her work at LE BAL from March 7 to May 19, 2024.
On a daily basis, numerous individuals gather to train at the street workout playground in Parc de Bercy, located in the 12th arrondissement of Paris. Medhy, one of the participants, has spearheaded various projects and initiatives to transform the site into more than just a sports ground. In May 2020, he invited Marine Peixoto to capture the essence of the place through her photography.
Her creative process synchronized with the rhythm of the ground – akin to individuals performing push-ups and pull-ups. Marine Peixoto embarked on an intensive photo shoot, where “pushing” signifies sculpting oneself every day, crafting a work of art. The routine, the repetition of training sessions, and the seasonal cycle challenged her resolve to “occupy the present.” This process compelled her to consistently refresh her perspective on the same space. The exhaustion of a place and a way of seeing becomes an unwavering act of faith in others and oneself.
Derived from the amassed photographic material since 2020, the installation at LE BAL brings together over 200 prints.

About the Author

Marine Peixoto was born in 1984 in Montpellier. Her work primarily revolves around photography and publishing. She graduated from the Haute École des Arts du Rhin in Strasbourg (2012), where she was a student of Manfred Sternjakob.
In a direct photographic engagement with reality and following the lines of her own biography, she explores what humans establish to exist – beliefs, occupations, constructions – with and against their condition.
Peixoto documents territories familiar to her, and situations in which she is involved. Self-publishing is the preferred form of her work, with around thirty publications created between 2017 and 2023. From entire days at the beach with her mother (€4 per day) to specific events like a retirement farewell party (Giant Paella) or a village celebration (Local Festival), her series questions how we occupy our existences in a given environment.
Monographic exhibitions dedicated to her work have been held in Montpellier (2018), Glassbox, Paris (2018), and La Salle de bains, Lyon (2022). She has also participated in several group exhibitions, including “Futur, ancien, fugitif” at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2019).
