SharGeek Unveils the Compact USB SSD Sharge Disk

The Sharge Disk is a brand-new M.2 NVMe SSD that is as small as two bottle caps, actively cooled, USB-C connected, and offers transfer rates of up to 1,000 MB/s.

The Sharge Disk, dubbed an “ultra-lightweight and portable M.S NVMe SSD,” is the newest offering from SharGeek, which has previously enjoyed great success with crowdsourcing campaigns (raising more than $2 million). It is probably best known for its Storm line of battery bank systems. Moving from energy to data storage, the Sharge Disk is enclosed in a compact, actively cooled aluminum shell and protected by a silicone casing that lessens the strain of regular use. It may be configured with up to 2TB of NVMe storage.

According to its advertising, the Sharge Disk is a storage option for people who frequently require high-speed access to their data from their phones, laptops, and cameras.

Particularly, cameras that enable file recording to an external recorder, like the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, may plug and play with the incredibly small Sharge Disk, and SharGeek claims that the data transmission rates are more than sufficient to capture 4K HD video.

Writing that much data can produce a lot of heat, so SharGeek incorporated a tiny 13,000 RPM fan inside the little chassis to keep the drive at a “suitable working temperature.” The fan is “silent,” according to the manufacturer, although it does specify that it has a working volume of up to 32 decibels, which is sufficient to hear clearly in a quiet environment. Although it’s probably not loud enough to be heard on camera, it’s still important to keep in mind.

According to the company, “We are still working to reduce the fan noise and we hope to bring it down to less than 20dB.”

The drive is described as versatile by the manufacturer since it can be used with a variety of devices, including iPads, the PlayStation 5, the Steam Deck, and cameras that support external SSDs.

The SSD inside the compact casing may be changed using a tool-free procedure, which further distinguishes the Sharge Disk from the analogy of a beefed-up thumb drive.

Sharge Disk will be available with Western Digital SN740 SSDs (512GB, 1TB, or 2TB sizes). The drive, which comes in gray or yellow, may be backed on Kickstarter for as little as $29 for the shell alone; the price rises based on the SSD chosen. The company intends to deliver finished products by September.
